Groundsman (Horticulture Apprenticeship Level 2)

Would you like to start your career with Manchester United Football Club?
Manchester United Football Club is looking to appoint a Groundsman who would be responsible for maintaining the football grounds not only at Manchester United but also their training grounds at Carrington, The Cliff and Littleton Road. You would be working towards achieving Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture (together with Functional skills in Maths and English Language at either Level 1 or 2 as or if required). Working hours are 39 hours per week Mon-Fri 8am-4.30pm, plus match days.

Permanent position available to dedicated person on completion of apprenticeship!

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Helping to maintain the playing surface to an excellent standard, to ensure that the games can go ahead on schedule
  • Helping to maintain the training pitches to an excellent standard, ensuring that the surface is usable and prepared for training sessions
  • Loading, transporting and storing equipment and materials
  • Ensuring all machinery is prepared for safe use, and cleaned and stored after use
  • Assist with mowing, line marking, renovation and setting out equipment
  • Undertake general maintenance tasks in relation to the playing surface and surrounding areas
  • Strict adherence to the Health and Safety Policy
Skills required: l
  • Willing and capable of carrying out medium to heavy manual work tasks in all weather conditions. This may include walking behind mowing machines for long periods. (E)
  • Be able to follow instructions, in particular for personal safety and the safety of others in the use of machinery and equipment. (E)
  • Be capable of achieving Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths and English (E)
  • Be available for some weekend and evening work (extra hours paid at going rate) (E)
  • Have some experience in grounds maintenance (D)
Personal qualities:
  • Applicants must be punctual and have an excellent record of attendance. (E)
  • Evidence will need to be provided within the application form of how you intend to travel to the Training Ground in order to meet the requirements of (1) above. (E)
